New development plan in the works to double open spaces, says CM

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis told the state legislature on December 16 that a new development plan is currently under preparation to increase open spaces in Mumbai from around one square metre per person at present to two square metres. It is likely to be put up for public suggestions and objections in March, said sources. Fadnavis was replying to a query by legislators over shrinking of playgrounds for children.

The city could look forward to more open spaces and thus better quality of air—if it goes vertical with higher FSI, and expands into new towns or smart cities in the metropolitan region by offering attractive land transfer to developers. Children, though, may miss more days of play in the existing playgrounds.

Not a single legislator touched the recent cabinet decision, which is yet to be enacted, following which Mumbaikars will have to cede their playgrounds to religious, cultural and political events for 45 days a year instead of 30 at present.

Meanwhile, minister of state for urban development Ranjit Patil admitted that children had no option but to play on the city's roads during holidays but refuted the legislators' allegation that they were being charged exorbitantly at the sports facilities created by civic authorities.

Even political rallies will be allowed (other than exhibitions, fairs, cultural and religious events) on local body-ruled playgrounds.
