Industrial location policy to be scrapped

MUMBAI: The state industries department has proposed to scrap the industrial location policy to allow expansion of existing industries in Mumbai.

Apoorva Chandra, principal secretary, industries, said the policy was more than 40 years old and had outlived its utility. "In fact, it is creating hurdles for those who already operate in the city and want to expand. It must be scrapped," he said.

Industrial location policies since the late 1960s were formulated initially to control the growth of industries in Mumbai to decongest the city and reduce pollution. In recent years, Pune was also included. At the same time, the policy sought to create alternative locations for industry by developing suitable areas in the less developed regions of the state, especially those which had the potential for industrial growth. The policy deals entirely with the manufacturing industry.

Chandra said some time ago, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd wanted to improve the quality of fuel to European standards to reduce pollution but the law created hurdles. "It took them a year and a half to obtain permissions to set up the facility since the law required that if you want to expand, then you must reduce the consumption of energy."
