The rift between the Shiv Sena and BJP is likely to benefit property owners in the city, as the latter is opposed to the BMC's plan to increase property tax by 20%.
The civic body will table a proposal before the standing committee on January 8, saying if property tax, as directed by the Bombay high court, is calculated based on the carpet area and not the built-up area, then it should be computed as 1.2% of the carpet area. If the 20% increase is not implemented, the BMC fears it would incur a loss of Rs 300 crore per annum.
"We will oppose the move, which is unethical and against the HC directive. The BMC should come up with a revised proposal without additional burden on Mumbaikars. We will vote against the proposal," said BJP corporator Manoj Kotak.
In the civic standing committee, Sena has 10 members, including the chairman of the committee, BJP has five and opposition parties, includes the Congress, NCP, MNS and SP, have 11 members. The BJP's five members' vote would be vital in the case. But sources feel the Sena may postpone the tabling of the proposal for a week, hoping the BJP would come around next week.
