Waive 18% interest on tax defaulters, say councillors

Municipal councillors met Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh on June 11 and urged him to waive off the 18% interest levied on property owners who have not paid up for the past few years.

Mayor Vimal Yadav, who was part of the delegation that met Singh, said, "From the time MCG was formed in 2008, there are many property owners, who, for various reasons, have not deposited property tax. There are many who want to pay up, but are holding back because of the 18% interest levied by the state government. We feel if this interest is waived off, many owners will come forward to pay the tax and MCG can earn around Rs 300 crore. We've urged the MP to urge the chief minister to waive off this penalty. We also want MCG not to collect property tax from villagers who live outside the 'lal dora' limit," he said.

At the meeting, councillors also demanded that the decision to include four new villages under MCG be rolled back. "The state government has recently notified that four villages in the district, Bandhwari, Darbaripur, Banola and Nurpur Jharsa, will be brought under MCG. We've asked Rao Inderjit to talk to the CM and make sure this doesn't happen, as MCG is not capable of handling the additional burden," said Yadav.

"MCG's existing manpower and infrastructure is already unable to handle demand. We don't want it to get worse. Residents of these villages have threatened to go to court if they are brought under MCG," added Yadav.

The MP promised to take up the two issues with CM Khattar soon.
